Chinaberry’s Fall Color

My Grandma Lynch had chinaberry trees in her yard on the northwest end of The Big Thicket. This is one of those species Neil Sperry calls “junk trees”. In Asia, where there are huge stands of them, they are harvested for lumber, but they were introduced to the US in the 1840′s (through Georgia) as an ornamental. Ornaments are in the eye of the beholder, of course, but they are also extremely poisonous. There are birds that eat the fruit, and Grandma Lynch enjoyed seeing the birds get drunk and fall out of her trees. (This was before TV and entertainment was where you found it here in East Texas.) She also had plum trees in her yard and my brother Rodney and I used to make ourselves sick eating the green fruit too early in the summer. Come to think of it, I think that amused her, too. ~ Larry

Father’s Day 2011

We followed him into the woods with the knives and guns he gave us; we followed him around lakes, up and down creeks and rivers. He taught us to clean squirrels, deer, and fish. How to take our guns and reels apart, clean them, oil them, and put them back together (with no spare parts). He taught us about girls, cars, and doing what we said we’d do. He wasn’t perfect, but as I get older I understand he did his best to be a good father, and that is about all any of us can hope to do.

Circle-Bar-H Ranch Has Fish, Too

Larry & Lucas with bass from Circle Bar H Ranch lake

We had gone out to shoot some new exteriors at the Circle-Bar-H Ranch but the clouds just weren’t dispersing so we decided to fish for a while. A later Norther had just blown in and the temperature had dropped 30 degrees…the wind was gusting out of the north to 40 mph. I put a fluke on for Lucas while I threw a horned toad. Even with the weather, we caught bass. Lucas managed to land his best ever, a 4 pounder, and I landed a 4 3/4 after she jumped twice and nosed into the grass.

This is a wonderful horse facility, but as an added bonus the 2-3 acre lake right behind the house, which is about fifteen years old, is loaded with fish. We’ll have to go back another day to update our exterior photos, and when we do we’ll be sure to take our fishing gear!
